Support Request: Can't remove secured desktop and restore to windows desktop

Description

I'm and consultant at a customer who has a valid license for SiteKiosk, and I'm helping in the development of an pilot case which if it works good will be used in the 109 shops in Sweden.

However I've big problems with your software. The latest version won't run with Win8 Embedded since it demands .Net 4.5.1 which seems to not be fully compatible with Win 8 Embedded. Therefore I tried an older version that just needs .Net 4.5. Or else I will always get a "you need .Net 4.5.1" error when starting the configure wizard, even though it's installed and verified to be properly installed by microsofts verifying tool as well.

The largest and emergent problem is that no matter how i try, I can't get rid of the sitekiosk secured desktop so I can see the Windows desktop when closing Sitekiosk - instead I just get a black screen with the mouse pointer. I've tried to run systemsecurity.exe /uninstall as well as uninstall Sitekiosk completely. I've tried every option in the window gui of systemsecurity.exe as well.

Now I've spent lots of hours in this and my patience is really lacking right now... I hope I can get fast support from you since there is a potential business of 100-200 more licenses from my customer.

Hello,

you should try pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL when you ear on the black screen witht he mouse pointer to check if the task manager displays where you can choose log out for getting the Windows login screen again (so that you can login to the Administrator account).

Otherwise please find here several methods for getting access to the Windows system again:

Generally SiteKiosk is supported with “Windows Embedded 8 Industry”.
The reason is that this Windows Embedded version will be provided as fixed bundle with all required components.

If you got problems with installing or using SiteKiosk on your Windows 8 Embedded system you can check if there is a package missing in your Windows 8 Embedded installation.
(E.g. Windows embedded versions often require a special .NET version from Microsoft for getting .NET 4.5.1 working.)

If it doesn’t work you need to use on of the supported Windows systems.

Nopes, sorry but I've tried that before without success. I've tried to log in with several different user accounts; local administrators as well as domain administrators. Sitekiosk autostarts every time and always with the secure shell instead of windows in the background. I've also read the linked article and followed it a numerous of times, as well as I've searched your support forum and tried everything I could find - even some registry editing tips.

We do have Win 8 Embedded Standard. But for now, it's not an issue not being able to run the latest version. The locked secured shell is, though. It seems like it's locked to every user account - even if I create new local ones.

This is very strange and some new fresh ideas would be appreciated. I've tried to create a new configuration too...

Hello,

Win 8 Embedded Standard is not supported with any SiteKiosk version (for the reasons I described above).

The start settings are not stored in the SiteKiosk configuration but in the Windows registry.
Which SiteKiosk start mode did you choose the last time before you did run into this problem?

Last time I chose the "Auto start but without secure shell" (can't remember the exact phrase) but it didn't have any effect. No matter which setting I try anywhere (even tried to uninstall/reinstall the software a couple of times) I can't get rid of the secure shell...

Hello,

You shouldn’t uninstall SiteKiosk while any auto start mode is set.

When using the default „Auto Start” mode the start settings are only set for the restricted SiteKiosk user account.
Only when using the “Customized” start settings you can enable the SiteKiosk Brower start for all users (or auto start SiteKiosk without shell replacement).

Anyway you may check the following path in the registry then:
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon”

Make sure that the value for “Shell” is set to “explorer.exe” so that the Windows shell can load.

Otherwise you may use a restore point from Windows to restore the system to a point before you activated the start mode / installed SiteKiosk.
