Support Request: Restricted User Account Installation Issues

Description

Hello,

We recently have been having problems with SiteKiosk 8.9 in that it will not install correctly. When going through the installation process, we have made sure that the installer was local (on the desktop) and that we would run sitekiosk8.exe /V"DEFAULTPASSWD=..." in the command prompt. The installer would start out fine on a standard installation but eventually would run into an error saying that the user account was not created and that we needed to run systemsecurity.exe/install in order to recreate the restricted user account. After completing this fix, however, another error would pop up, putting the installation into a continual loop of errors that, when "fixed", do not solve any of the installation issues with regard to the restricted user account. The installer continues to think that the user account needs to be created in order to proceed, even though it actually has already created it. I was able to find a workaround for the issue by utilizing a custom install in which the check box to set system security manager to default settings is purposely unchecked. This allowed for me to successfully install SiteKiosk although it left the System Security Manager unable to work properly as it still thought that the restricted user account was not created properly. I have uploaded the config file, the log files, as well as some screenshots of the errors and the standard installation process. It is essential that we are able to get this working as the department needs the security manager to work properly.

I appreciate any and all assistance with the issue! Thanks.

There are no known issues installing SiteKiosk on a computer which meets the minimum system requirements.

The errors you are receiving indicate that you are trying to install SiteKiosk while there is a partial installation already on the computer. I recommend completely reinstalling the software to resolve the issue.

To do a complete uninstall, go to add/remove programs (Programs & Features) in the Windows control panel select SiteKiosk and choose "Change" (not Uninstall) then choose the "Remove" radio button. Next check the box "Remove all created data" and proceed with the uninstall. This will remove all the SiteKiosk program files from your PC at which point you can reinstall.

Please see below the information about how to remove SiteKiosk manually so that you can start from scratch.

1. Check that SiteKiosk is removed from the Windows software menu (-->Control Panel-->Add remove programs)

2. Delete the SiteKiosk services by using the Windows command “sc delete” (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251192) at the command line (cmd.exe).
- sc delete skpcdsvc
- sc delete “SiteRemote Client”
- sc delete sitekioskconfig

3. Delete the SiteKiosk user account at (-->Control Panel-->User Accounts)

4. Delete the folder “SiteKiosk" at "…\Program Files (x86)" (32Bit "C:\Program Files\...") and "C:\Users\..." (Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8)

5. Delete the registry entry "PROVISIO" at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node" (32 Bit "HKLM-->Software") with using regedit.

6. Restart the system.

Generally there is no known issue with installing SiteKiosk on supported operating systems.
Before you reinstall please download the latest version and check the system requirements.

You also have an alternative to using third party tools such as revo uninstaller to completely uninstall SiteKiosk.

Thanks for the response. The system is well over the minimum system requirements so that is not the problem. The issue continues to persist after the complete removal of SiteKiosk from the system (registry, program files, etc.) and the installation of the newest version (version 8.91.3042 Final Version). I was able to get SiteKiosk itself installed and working by some workarounds but it leaves off the System Security Manager and the Restricted User Account. I am only able to run it via the Admin account since it is unable to create the restricted one, and the security manager does not run, continuing to give the error message about the restricted user account. When running the installer, the default user password is indeed set to something which meets the requirements of the domain that this machine is a part of, although I feel that this could be part of the problem since the installation process continues to give errors stating that the default password does not meet the requirements and that the user account could not be created (even though it does get created). I think that, even though the account exists, the System Security Manager still thinks that has not been, which throws the software into a continual cycle of errors that can never be fully fixed. Each fix seems to cause an error with the other. I will attempt an install on the machine while it is temporarily removed from the group domain. Do you know if this will cause issues with the installed software after it is re-added?

Thanks for the support.

Taking the machine off the domain group is a good idea and should not cause any issues when reassigned. The error is based on restrictions set in your environment to monitor/manage the creation of new Windows User Accounts.

You may check with your Network Administrator as to what other restrictions are set other than the requirement of a strong user account password?

If you already have domain policies protecting your domain accounts, you can also have SiteKiosk automatically load in one of those account rather than the default SiteKiosk restricted User which is created during installation:

To utilize a different user account than the default SiteKiosk user account, you will need to use the "Customized" SiteKiosk start options.

1. Open the SiteKiosk Start menu and select the option "Customized" then click "OK".
2. Select the option "Run SiteKiosk automatically at Windows startup (auto start)" and "Auto start with shell replacement" from the dropdown.
3. Uncheck the box labeled "Settings only apply to the restricted SiteKiosk user account".
4. Check the box labeled "Log on automatically at system startup" then click the "Settings" button.
5. In the Auto Login dialog window enter the credentials for the domain user that you would like SiteKiosk to run under.
6. Click "OK" then you will be prompted to reboot

Installing the software on a newly re-imaged system and before the computer was added to the domain proved successful. All aspects of the installation seem to be working as expected now, with System Security Manager opening without any error or issue. However, it appears that now the config file has been altered just enough to break the process of opening some of the PDFs that the kiosk is required to open. The links that are experiencing the issue are redirects to a download, as they do not open directly within the browser like most other PDF links. SiteKiosk shows that the file is being downloaded, opening the download window which shows the directory, file name, and elapsed time. SiteKiosk proceeds to open a new window to open the PDF in once it has finished downloading, but freezes and eventually crashes. Upon further inspection, the debug viewer shows that SiteKiosk is in an infinite loop of navigating to where the file was opened. Any ideas on how to fix this? Everything else is working perfectly now except for this one thing.

Thanks.

If you have any suggestions or ideas that would be great as our institution is approaching a time when our kiosks are under heavy load. Thanks.
