Support Request: Start Screen Editor (Open Editor) not working

Description

I have installed the most recent release for SiteKiosk 9 for testing in an attempt to create a new Chrome Browser Start Screen for display on 5 kiosks. When clicking on the "Open Editor" button for the Start Screen Editor...nothing happens. For test purposes, I am using the example.skcfg that was included with the application installation. Unless I am misunderstanding the function of the app, I should be getting an editor that lets me customize the start screen. I have included my log files and example.skcfg, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. There are no known issues related to this, but you can take a look on some factors.

1. Check if this folder exists or if there is limitation with using Public users: C:\Users\Public\SiteKiosk\content
2. Check if you have domain security rules or other security settings like firewall or antivirus that would affect Configuration Editor port: 8889
3. Check that if you installed SiteKiosk over a previous install that the folder was not corrupted in any way. This would require a deletion of that folder and reinstall SiteKiosk.
4. Try reinstalling SiteKiosk from the Add/Remove Programs menu by selecting Modify>>Remove>>"Automatic removal of all created data".

Best regards,
Andre.

Hello Andre,

Thanks for your response

1. Check if this folder exists or if there is limitation with using Public users: C:\Users\Public\SiteKiosk\content
-None that I can see, to be sure I added "everyone" w/ full control to C:\Users\Public\Site Kiosk w/ no change.

2. Check if you have domain security rules or other security settings like firewall or antivirus that would affect Configuration Editor port: 8889
-Windows Firewall is disabled, I removed AV, and I tested on a network w/ no configured network security,
netstat shows port 8889 as listenting.

3. Check that if you installed SiteKiosk over a previous install that the folder was not corrupted in any way. This would require a deletion of that folder and reinstall SiteKiosk.
-I installed software on a freshly imaged machine w/ no previous SiteKiosk installations.

4. Try reinstalling SiteKiosk from the Add/Remove Programs menu by selecting Modify>>Remove>>"Automatic removal of all created data".
-I reinstalled SiteKiosk per instructions w/ no change, the Start Screen Editor "Open Editor" button still performs
no discernible action when clicked.

Any other ideas?

Hello,

Thank you for trying those steps. For the OS, did you use a company/organization image, OEM image or fresh from Microsoft image? You could also ensure to complete all possible Windows Updates pending.

If you are using a company image, try a default Windows ISO, even on a VM, and test. There are no known issues on default Windows installs. Alternatively, you can customize Start Screen and transfer the "content" folder to the device that you are not able to do the editing.

Best regards,
Andre.

Hello Andre,

I am using a corporate image, I did build a test VM with an MS image and installed SiteKiosk. Everything seems to be working fine with the MS image, I can access the Start Screen editor.

I will try your recommendation of customizing the Start Screen and transferring the content over to Kiosks running the corporate image...thank you for your assistance!

Hi David,

Thank you for letting us know. If you do find the cause that is affecting SiteKiosk in your corporate image, please share with us by email to US Support: https://www.sitekiosk.com/contact/

In corporate images, if you find that Auto Start does not stay, just launch "Start SiteKiosk" with "Run As Admin...". you can decide to take SiteKiosk off your domain and network, if domain resources are not required.

Best regards,
Andre.
