Coin Selectors WH EMP800 and EMP850 / Change Giver GW200 / Escrow E104

The coin selectors EMP 800 and EMP850 allow you to charge your users for the time they spend online when using coins as a means of payment. The current models come with a USB port, while older models still include an RS232 COM port.

Note:
While identical to the EMP800, the EMP850 sports an elegant steel front panel.


There is also a version available which allows for the simultaneous operation of the emp800 coin selector and the Vector bill reader if the devices are connected to the COM300 port. You can use other models to also implement an escrow device (E104) or a change giver (GW200).

1. System requirements
1.1 Hardware
  1. Coin selector EMP800 / EMP850, if applicable, including Vector bill reader, change giver GW200, and escrow E104
  2. COM dongle or USB interface
  3. Power Supply Unit (not necessarily required if you are using the EMP800 USB cable version; see below)
  4. Modern PC with available COM or USB port

2. Installing the EMP800/EMP850
The installation process of the coin selector varies with the model you are using. Continue here if you are using the EMP800 model including RS232 and here your EMP 800 uses the COM300 USB interface.
2.1 EMP800/EMP850 with RS232 COM port:
  1. Dongle connection to the COM port (RS232) of the computer
    Connect the included COM port cable together with the dongle plug directly to the COM port of your computer.
  2. COM cable connection to coin selector
    Connect the other end of the cable to the coin selector's enclosure. To do so, use the 25-pin adapter plug.

    Warning:
    Pay attention to the plug's polarity. If you insert and connect the cable the wrong way, the coin selector will be damaged irreparably. This applies in particular to older models! A faulty installation will result in the loss of the device's warranty.

    The plug is labeled at the end with TOP and BOTTOM. In addition, the plug has guides to help you make the connection (BOTTOM). Insert the plug into the coin selector in such a way that the guides (BOTTOM) will fit the plug exactly and the protruding notch faces up (TOP). The white or orange cable and the yellow cable will then be on the far left and the far right, respectively.

  3. Power supply from power supply unit
    The COM 400 version of the coin selector needs its own power supply. Power has to be supplied by an external power supply unit which usually ships with the coin selector. You will have to connect the unit to the coin selector's interface card (dongle plug).


2.2 EMP800/EMP850 with USB interface
  1. Download drivers
    The USB version of the EMP 800 requires specific drivers. Download the driver from our Web site. Please unzip this archive into the directory of your choice before you connect the device to your USB port.
  2. Connect coin selector
    Simply use the USB connector of the device to plug it into an available USB port on your computer. The coin checker is available in two USB versions:


    • USB dongle version (external)
      This older version ships with an external USB dongle and needs to be put together. Connect the included USB cable plus dongle plug with the coin checker enclosure. To do so, use the 25-pin adapter plug. Make sure to insert the plug in the right direction (guide rails). This coin checker requires an external power source to operate. Connect the included AC adapter to the external dongle plug.


    • USB cable version (integrated)
      This version will also work without a connected AC adapter. However, if the coin selector does not receive enough power through the USB port of your computer, you can connect an additional (12V) power supply unit to the coin selector to account for any power fluctuations. You will find the corresponding port directly behind the front bezel on the left-hand side below the inscription US PAT. #6 085 889.


    Attention:
    You will need to install TWO drivers before you can use the coin checker. See steps 3 and 4.
  3. Install driver "USB High Speed Serial Converter"
    The following dialog box will pop up when you insert the coin checker: "Found New Hardware Wizard":


    • Select: Install software from a list or specific location.
    • "Next"
    • "Browse"
    • Select the folder to which you unzipped the driver.
    • "Next"
      You will now be shown a safety prompt for the Windows logo test.
    • Select: Continue installation.
      The "USB High Speed Serial Converter" will now be installed.
    • "Finish"

    You cannot use the device yet. Follow the instructions given in step 4.

  4. Install "USB Serial Port" driver
    The following dialog box will open "Found New Hardware Wizard":


    • Select: Install software from a list or specific location.
    • "Next"
    • "Browse"
    • Select the folder to which you unzipped the driver.
    • "Next". You will now be shown a safety prompt for the Windows logo test.
    • Select: Continue installation. The "USB Serial Port" will now be installed.
    • "Finish"

    The taskbar will show the following message: "The new hardware was installed and is now ready for use."



3. Configuring the coil selector features
3.1 General information
After installing SiteKiosk and connecting the hardware to your computer, you can use the SiteKiosk Configuration Wizard to create a configuration. Select the entry "wh EMP800" from the list of available devices and activate the device by clicking on Customize.

The green dot next to the entry for the device indicates that the payment device has been enabled.
3.2 Detecting coin selector automatically
Click on DETECT. The payment module will usually detect automatically to which COM port you connected the coin selector.
If the payment module fails to detect the coin selector, check again if you connected the device correctly and if it receives enough power. Check the power supply unit (12 volts!) if you coin selector operates with an additional power supply unit. If the device is still not working despite these measures, please contact us.

Once it has detected the device, the payment module will automatically read out the coin selector's identification and verification. If this does not happen, the device's verification will not have been registered in the file empconf.ini. Please contact us in this case or download the current empconf.ini from our website and save it to the folder ..\SiteKiosk\SiteCash. Overwrite the old file.
3.3 Coin values
If the device has been detected successfully, you will be asked whether or not you wish to adopt the coin values from the coin selector. However, you are also free to define the values yourself. Coin value means that you can determine the exchange rate of foreign currencies in relation to the defined main currency. For example, if you have defined US dollar as the main currency and you want to admit the EURO as well, you will have to enter the corresponding exchange rate in relation to the main currency.

Disable the individual coins you do not want to admit in everyday use. For instance, if you want to admit only EURO coins, you will have to disable all the other coins. Finish by pressing OK to close the window.

Your coin selector is now ready for use.


4. Combination: EMP800 coin selector + escrow E104
The payment device emp800 supports intermediary checkout, which is required, for example, by vending machines. Before you can use this function, you will need an escrow device (E104) for your EMP800 coin selector, which is made by wh-Berlin. Once you have set up the device, all coins a user has inserted before cancelling the payment process will be returned.

Example: You operate a SiteKiosk terminal including IP telephone. Your customers are required to insert some money before they can dial a number. If no phone connection can be established, the intermediary checkout device will return the money. In contrast, the amount the customer provided will drop into the coin collecting tray if the connection could be established successfully.

Before you can put the E104 device into service, you have to enable the function “Escrow connected” within the emp800 configuration dialog box.


5. Combination: EMP800 coin selector + Vector bill reader
There is also the possibility to run the emp800 together with the MDB bill acceptor Vector. If needed, we can also add other MDB devices. Submit a request and we will implement other bill readers that include an MDB interface in the same way.
5.1 Necessary hardware
  1. EMP800 coin selector (v5 or higher)
  2. MDB converter "MDB 100"
  3. including cable "K 813/500" to connect to the coin selector
  4. including cable "K409/750" to connect to the bill acceptor
  5. Bill acceptor "Vector" including MDB interface
  6. PC interface "COM 300.M" (with USB port)
  7. including cable "K504"
5.2 Configuration
After setting up the hardware you can start the configuration and enable the EMP800 coin selector as usual.
You will not find the Vector under payment devices. Instead, open your configuration file (..\SiteKiosk\Config\*.skcfg) in an editor. In the file, you will find a section that looks like this by default:

To use the Vector bill acceptor, modify the entries in accordance with the example below (with 1, 5 and 10 dollar bills being accepted on the first three channels as an example; note that the channels may vary for your device):

6. Combination: EMP800 coin selector + GW 200 change giver
The payment device emp800 now also supports the change giver GW 200 by wh-Berlin. However, if you want to employ this solution, you will be required to use the dongle interface COMx00.M. Once its tubes are filled with cash, this device will be able to dispense change or return any remaining balance at the end of a surfing session (as long as tubes are filled).

The unit comes complete with a coin acceptor. The configuration and recognition process is the same as for the regular emp800.


7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Coins keep falling through
  1. Check the connection between coin selector and PC.
  2. Check if the PSU is connected if your coin selector works with an additional power supply unit. It is advisable that you connect an optional power supply unit (12 volts) if you are experiencing these problems with your USB model that operates without a PSU.
  3. Compare the coin selector's verification with your payment module configuration. The device must have been detected.
  4. Check if the desired coins are enabled (checkbox).
  5. Check the coin insertion door for impurities.
  6. You may experience a problem with the EURO currency where the coins are not in accordance with the defined norm as the individual mints have, in part, coined rather unequal coins. All you can do in such a case is re-adjust the coin selector.
7.2 Individual coins are not being recognized
  1. Compare the coin selector's verification with your payment module configuration.
  2. Check if the desired coins are enabled (checkbox).
  3. Check the coin insertion door for impurities.
  4. Use a different coin.
  5. You may experience a problem with the EURO currency where the coins are not in accordance with the defined norm as the individual mints have, in part, coined rather unequal coins. All you can do in such a case is re-adjust the coin selector.
7.3 I want to use my coin selector with other coins
Coin selectors produced after September 2000 have 4 available slots that can be trained to work with different coins. Please contact the manufacturer WH-Trenner GmbH in Berlin for the necessary documentation.
