Support Anfrage: Volume Control Missing on Windows 7

Reproduktion

Upon startup the volume control will not display in the site kiosk task manager bar. The option to hide the volume control is NOT checked.

Beschreibung

On certain models of computers windows 7 disables the audio control until headphones or speakers are plugged into the audio jack. On these computers site kiosk will not display the audio control in the task bar even after headphones or speakers are plugged in unless the computer is rebooted.

SiteKiosk either needs to poll the availability of the sound system regularly, or needs an option to force the volume control to always display.

Which model of computer are you using? The only way we could replicate this on our Windows 7 test systems was to either have no sound card installed or deactivate the sound in Windows or decativate it in SiteKiosk under “-->Themes/Design-->Customize-->Task Bar”:

Dell 755 and Dell 745 both monitor the audio jacks to see if anything is plugged in. When there is nothing plugged in, the driver automatically disables the "Speakers" listed under sound devices. When you look under "Playback devices" you will see "No audio devices are installed". Once a device is plugged into either the front or rear speaker jack windows again displays the normal "Speakers" device.

You can manually replicate this by right clicking on the windows volume control, and selecting "Playback devices". Next select the "Playback" tab, and right click on "Speakers" then finally click "Disable". (You may want to make sure there is a check next to the option "Show Disabled Devices")

The audio devices on the Dell 755 and 745 models use drivers made by "RealTek".

SiteKiosk is not directly accessing the sound card but only displays the volume setting if there is a sound card available in Windows. The installation of the sound card applies to Windows. If the sound card is disabled on Windows or the sound card isn’t correctly installed it can’t be displayed in SiteKiosk. If you disable the speakers there is also no volume displayed in SIteKiosk. It all applies to Windows and the installation of the sound card in WIndows and not to SiteKiosk.

Is there a difference between “Run once” and “Auto Start” mode? We have tested with several RealTek Chipset and RealTek is a common chipset for sound cards. Maybe an application needs to load for the sound card which is placed in the “Startup” folder of Windows. Please see the following article.
