Support Request: Screen going to sleep!

Reproduction

Description

Hi,
We currently operate kiosks in a dual screen configuration, with a signage solution projecting video to the second screen. To accommodate for this I set Site Kiosks digital signage settings so that the second screen shows blank. Generally this works well for us however I have noted one strange quirk......
At between 8.30 & 9.30 am each day a number of kiosks will send the second display to sleep even though the signage solution is still playing. If a user touches the touch screen (i.e. the first screen) the the secondary monitor comes back to life and shows the signage.
I have ensured that the Windows screen saver within Windows is completely deactivated, and check all Windows saving power features to ensure this isn't a windows problem. Also the digital signage solution does not control the kiosk in any way shape or form and my tests have ruled it out as the cause for this problem.
Site Kiosk on each kiosk is set to reboot at 8.30 each morning. This seems to coincide with the secondary screens being asleep. Its very difficult to track down the problem because once a screen is touched, everything is fine. Its proving a very difficult bug to find as I've ruled out all the obvious options! The issue occurs on all the versions of 7 that I've tried.
Many Thanks
Craig

Hello,
SiteKiosk has no function to just send the second monitor into sleep mode.
Note that the Windows screensaver and power save options are user dependent. Make sure you have checked those under the user you run SiteKiosk with.

Hi

I've been testing this issue thoroughly over the past two weeks (much to my dissapointment, as the testing process has been fairly dull) & the issue is certainly related to Site Kiosk; however the circumstances in which the issue occurs is very specific which could explain why it has went unnoticed. Also I can confirm that the screen is not going to sleep. Instead it is displaying the selected screen saver used within the SK configuration module.

Essentially I can replicate the issue on the following circumstances:

1. The current SK configuration uses a javascript to launch Signage Live on the secondary screen. SL functions perfecctly well on the second screen.
2. SK has the second screen activated using the optional advertising module box checked. The screen saver is set to blank (however I can replicate the issue with any other screen saver)
3. The Windows SiteKiosk user account has the following display settings: Screen Saver set to None & Power Saving features are switched off.

The problem is as follows:
1. SK reboots in the morning
2. Approximately 60 minutes after reboot the rear screen shows the selected screen saver as set within the SK Configuration module. This only occurs if the kiosk has not been touched or interacted with by a user.
3. If during the first 60 minutes a user does interact with the kiosk then the rear screen will never display the screen saver.

A possible fix would be to allow the user to configure SK to set the secondary screen to no screen saver. At present this cannot be done. I am currently testing to see if remote jobs can waken the kiosk & thus offset the issue by simple using remote jobs at regular intervals to prevent the screen going to sleep.

Kind regards
Craig

Hello,

There is no known issue with the screen saver functions and generally SiteKiosk doesn’t care about any external application you start beside SiteKiosk.
This also means that the application on the second screen can fall into the background so that the chosen content for the second screen will be displayed (in your case a black screen as you have chosen blank).

Generally you should make sure that the application you start with SiteKiosk (Signage Live) will be displayed top most.
If and how this is possible you should ask the manufacturer of that application.

If you don’t want to display any content (controlled by SiteKiosk) on the second screen at all you can deactivate the second screen in SiteKiosk (-->Display-->Screen Saver).
Then just start your application there via script.
But note that in this case the main screen saver will be displayed on both screens.

If you don’t want to display any content on the second screen at all even if you have activated the second monitor in SiteKiosk (to make sure the main screen saver will just displayed on the main screen) you can edit the SiteKiosk configuration (e.g. with Notpad).

Search for the line

<multimonitor enabled="true">

Below you will find the line with the chosen conten. For example

<application>scrnsave.scr</application>

Delete the scr content at that line :

<application></application>

Generally you should also have a look at the log files (…\SiteKiosk\Logfiles) if having any problems or strange behaviours with SiteKiosk.
